Report on the Proform XP Elliptical Trainer

August 16th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As you proabably already know if you have been researching at home workout equipment, the various machines are pretty expensive. Elliptical bikes or trainers are no exception. A moderately priced elliptical bike can run you a couple thousand dollars. The Proform XP elliptical trainer is an exception.

The Proform XP retails for around $600. The best ellipticals run several thousand dollars so how does this economic model stack up? The answer is, surprisingly well.

Most customers are happy with it’s overall performance. There are some issues with design and functionality, but that is to be expected with a machine as inexpensive as this one is. Several reports with minor malfunctions when the bike is used at low settings, like one or two. The best way to combat this is to use it at higher settings. Several reports that the heart monitor is erratic and can’t be trusted to always perform accurately.

Some reports that the pedals broke after a short period of time. Most reports, however, say that the manufacturer fixed the problem. A lot of critics report other, more serious issues, but very few of these are substantiated by consumer reports. Most, we believe, are an attempt by rival brands to discredit this model.

Most positive reports mention good durability, reliable performance and of course, a low price. Overall, reports for this model elliptical are good. Do not expect it to rival a four thousand dollar machine, it is inferior in overall quality. But if you’re looking for a reliable, inexpensive workout machine, this one is for you.

The 2010 ProForm Treadmills – Really Any Different?

July 10th, 2010

The new line of 2010 ProForm treadmills has been released. What is first striking about them is that they are advertised by their year. This is not typically done in exercise equipment industry. This is in contrast to the automobile industry, where manufacturers have always advertised the year of their new models. This could be simply to build more demand for the “latest” model, but in the exercise equipment industry, what happens when the equipment is no longer new? Wouldn’t it be much harder to sell?

ProForm’s market position may help to explain their current thinking. ProForm has released several hundred models in the past decades. Each model may be barely distinguishable from another. It has sometimes been frustrating for careful buyers who try to figure out these differences. Often, the biggest difference appears to be the model number or name. These slight differences make it easier for the manufacturer to test-market various features. It can also prevent older model from becoming “old” and less saleable. But if this is good business, why is ProForm calling their new models the “2010 Models?”

Some people have criticized ProForm treadmills for poor quality. Perhaps ProForm has listened to this criticism, because the quality of ProForm’s 2010 treadmills is very high. ProForm has outsold other brands of home treadmill for several years, so they must have had some pretty decent quality all along. Theirs new line is definitely a big improvement though. Their new treadmills have bigger motors and belts than past years’, higher weigh capacities, longer warranties, and other new features. The prices of the new models are higher, but not by much. It appears that ProForm has decided to offer fewer, but higher quality, models. Most of the 2010 models are available with iFit Live, a way to connect to the Internet, run races against your Facebook friends, and run along “actual” routes shown on your screen. Not everyone will want to do that, of course, but it suggests that ProForm is not content to sell merely ordinary treadmills.

It appears that ProForm has gained the treadmill lead by catering their products to typical home users. Typical home users seems to weigh less than 250 lbs, want to walk or jog for up to an hour per day a few times a week, and don’t want to spend a lot. It could be that ProForm is trying to change its market niche from affordable and popular to affordable and high quality. Doing this could also take some sales from the next level, those treadmills that sell for between $1,000 and $1,500.

ProForm may also be labeling their new models with the year because they have adopted new manufacturing methods. Most ProForms are assembled in the United States. Manufacturing in the U.S. has faced huge challenges in past decade. The companies that have survived have adapted and have streamlined their manufacturing process. One of the ways they do this by keeping “just in time” inventory. Not long ago, a company simply manufactured products and then tried to sell them. That can be risky, and expensive. The way that has evolved, however, is to estimate demand for a product as accurately as possible, and then to produce only as many of that product as is likely to be sold within a very short period. This inventory management process partially explains why car manufacturers label their cars with their years. When a year is over, the models made in, or identified by, that year are no longer made! It looks like ProForm is adapting these inventory methods to the exercise equipment industry.

Robert Braun has been using, selling, and writing about exercise equipment for decades. For more information on ProForm treadmills, see http://www.Treadmill-World.com/proform-treadmill.html.

The CardioCross Elliptical Proform 675 Provides A Low Power Workout As Its Top Selling Point

April 19th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The CardioCross Elliptical Proform 675 is an elliptical trainer offering a low power workout as it’s top selling point.

Elliptical trainers are used to stimulate walking, running while being sure to not cause joint pressure, and the trainers have a developed quite a following for lowering the risk of impact injuries. Ellipticals have traditionally provided a cardiovascular workout by working the upper and lower body, but as manufacturers usher in a new age of trainers, some ellipticals are losing their upper body components. Trainers are used for burning calories, building bone density, maintaining good cardiovascular health, and creating a surge in energy levels.

The Elliptical Proform 675

The Elliptical Proform 675, complete with an instant feedback display, features a large LCD window that allows users to keep track of key facts like, calories burned, pulse, time, speed, and distance traveled. The Proform’s console sports a Coolaire Workout Fan. The Proform 675 allows users to adjust the intensity of their workout with the help of adjustable electromagnetic resistance. The Elliptical Proform 675 offers a fourteen inch stride. The longer stride is offered in an effort to provide Elliptical users with longer muscles, and the ability to grab a long range of motion.

The Elliptical Proform 675 enjoys a particularly large fan following among older adults. Athletes in search of a jogging style workout represent another portion of the Elliptical Proform 675’s purchasers. Building up the heart rate without building up the muscles it the central goal of this trainer.

Typically retailing at approximately $299.00, the Elliptical Proform 675 is dubbed as “an easy to use trainer,” the Elliptical Proform 675 comes with a number of amenities. Some of the trainer’s top rated features include Silent Magnetic Resistance, a trademarked Competitor Control Panel, EKG Grip Pulse Rating, and an over sized foot pedal as a part of it’s Step Thru Design. The Proform’s Step Thru Design makes the trainer low to the ground, improving the ability to easily exit.

Glossary of Elliptical Proform 675 Features

Silent Magnetic Resistance: Silent Magnetic Resistance, also commonly called SMR, is a system without friction that offers users the ability to choose a specific level for workout intensity.

EKG Pulse Reader: The Elliptical Proform 675’s EKG Pulse Reader is designed to asses pulse rates through use of sensors built into the handlebars of the trainer.

Over sized Foot Pedal: The Proform’s roomy foot pedals were created in hopes of offering users optimum comfort.

Proform 675 Elliptical Trainer Problems

January 18th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Proform 675 elliptical trainer is a basic low priced CardioCross Trainer. It is priced at $299.00 which way below the minimum $1000.00 price we recommend people pay for a good elliptical trainer. It does have a number of good features that include

Wide oversized pedalsA large LCD display console that allows you to track speed, time, distance and calories.EKG grip pulse sensors for heart rateTwo speed fanIcon’s SMR Silent Magnetic Resistance However it has only a very short 14 inch stride length which precludes anyone with normal or longer length legs from using this elliptical trainer comfortably. We decided to purchase the Proform 675 Elliptical trainer and give it a full test. It arrived just 2 weeks after our order. However it was broken and could not be assembled to conduct our testing. We contacted customer service to get a replacement. This request was refused but a technician was scheduled to repair it.

The repairman took 10 more days to arrive and immediately stated it was not repairable. After 3 more weeks we did receive a replacement 675 elliptical trainer. After setting it up our smallest tester who has literally hundreds of hours of elliptical trainer time took it for an initial ride. All went well for about 30 minutes when it started to generate considerable noise. After some tightening up the elliptical trainer the test was continued. After one hour of riding the Proform 675 our tester took a break and let our second tester take the elliptical trainer for a ride. It was immediately noted that the display console was not working. Despite several attempts to get it working we concluded it was dead. Again we called customer service for assistance. They were clearly irritated with our request for a new console and a visit from the technician. They did not answer our emails and only because we had access to supervisor numbers at Icon were we able to get the problem resolved. All this required another 12 days of delay.

The technician came and replaced the Proform 675 elliptical trainer console and it tested out just fine but as we were testing it, an additional problem developed. The technician noted that something was wrong with the magnetic resistance. After examination he stated that the SMR silent magnetic resistance unit was failing and would have to be replaced. Again we spent a good deal of time on the phone with customer service since they did not answer our emails. We decided to ask for a refund under the 30 refund clause. We were told that more than 30 days had elapsed since we had purchase the Proform 675 elliptical trainer and we did not qualify.

In gathering background information on this unit we came across a good number of customer reviews that found the Proform 675 to be a very poor piece of fitness equipment. The total lack of any quality and the extremely poor customer service was a common thread through most product reviews. We strongly recommend that you do not buy the Proform 675 elliptical trainer. Again it is unwise to purchase any elliptical trainer that does not have an initial cost of at least $1000.00. It is paramount that you check customer reviews before you consider purchasing any elliptical trainer.
