Finding The Best Elliptical Machine – A Recommendation For Every Price Range

February 22nd, 2010

Choosing the best elliptical machine is all a matter of figuring out what you want to do with it. Whether you’re a serious athlete cross training for a medal, or an old guy looking to give your heart a boost three times a week as per doctor’s orders, your elliptical needs will be different. Here are three suggestions. These are 3 of the most consistently highly ranked ellipticals.

Best For A Serious Workout

If you are serious about personalizing your workout and getting the most out of your machine, the Precor EFX 5.17i might be the machine for you. Precor is often considered the best elliptical designer in the industry. They have more patents than any other elliptical manufacturer, and build some of the smoothest machines.

The EFX 5.71 has 4 different programs and 20 resistance levels. With all of these options, you can keep your routine varied and interesting. These features also help you to exercise different parts of your body.

You may have used a Precor in your local gym or fitness center before. These models are often used commercially because of their high quality. There are ellipticals that have more features and programmable options, but for a good overall package, Precors are great. They are sturdy and reliable, and relatively easy to use compared to other commercial grade machines.

You can buy a new Precor EFX 5.71 for $2,800.

Best Mid-Range Elliptical

If you want a good, comfortable machine, the Smooth CE 3.2 may be the one. Smooth ellipticals really live up to their name. They use a heavy duty flywheel, rather than the usual rollers most machines use, and this makes for a much more comfortable ride. Being comfortable and relaxed when you work out is important, and the Smooth can’t be beat.

Smooth was one of the first companies to make their machines with movable handlebars. Now, it’s hard to even imagine using one without. Smooth’s design can’t be beat for maximum comfort and efficiency in working out your whole body.

This model also has preset functions in case you want to give yourself a challenge. You don’t have to, of course, but features such as resistance levels and user profiles can add a lot to your workout.

Smooth CE 3.2’s usually retail for about $2,000, but with a little shopping around you can probably find one for around $1,500.

Best Affordable Model

If you’re just looking for a quality machine to run on and don’t need special features or programs, the Sole E25 is the most recommended machine. It is well built, and comes at a reasonable price. Many consider the Sole E25 to be the best elliptical available for under $2,000.

Soles are comfortable because they use a flywheel instead of rollers, and they have fully adjustable foot pedals. This is a feature most ellipticals do not have. You can adjust practically everything on these machines, and get the most comfortable workout possible.

Soles are also sturdy. The E25 can hold up to 300 pounds without pushing it. And, if you feel like challenging yourself, there are options such as resistance settings to challenge yourself with.

Choosing the best elliptical machine is not easy. First, you should know what you’re looking for. Don’t pay extra for features you don’t need. Elliptical prices can get up into the stratosphere. Know what you need and how much you’d like to spend before you go shopping.

February 8th, 2010

Whether you work out at home, on some home gym equipment or you are attending a health club, cardiovascular exercise is an important part of your exercise regime. Elliptical trainers are gaining in popularity both in health clubs all over North America and as machines in people’s homes all over.

Why Are Elliptical Machines So Popular?

Elliptical crosstrainers have gained popularity so quickly because they are extremely beneficial exercise machines. If you are looking for a highly effective fat burning workout, than an elliptical machine is the piece of equipment for you. When you walk into your health club you will be faced with a number of different choices for cardio equipment. What should you choose? If you are looking for a complete body cardio workout that is low impact than an elliptical trainer is for you.

What Does Low Impact Mean?

Elliptical trainers are low impact because your feet do not have to leave the foot pads during the workout. When you workout on a traditional treadmill your feet will repeatedly lift from the pad and strike it, causing impact on your joints. The joints that are affected with an impact form of exercise are usually the knees, ankles, hips and back. With an elliptical machine you still get the benefits of other impact machines but with no impact thereby saving unnecessary wear and tear on your joints.

What About Losing Weight?

In today’s time crunched society everyone is looking for a quick fix. More and more overweight people are looking for an easy solution to lose weight and keep it off. The truth is that there is no magic pill that you can take, a sensible diet and regular exercise is the only solution to the problem of obesity. If you need to lose weight then you will need to engage your body in aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise gets the heart pumping faster and it allows your body to burn calories faster and more effectively. The elliptical crosstrainer is a very effective machine that allows your body to work harder, faster and burn more calories.

Elliptical trainers burn calories faster because you are using both your arms and your legs during the workout. By using both arms and legs you are utilizing two major muscle areas instead of just one as you do with steppers or treadmills. Because you are engaging more major muscle groups you are optimizing your energy expenditure which burns more calories. And as we all know, if you want to kick start fat burning, you need to use calories.

Total body exercise is beneficial because you will be able to sculpt and tone your legs, buttocks and hips as well as your arms, chest and back. By using your entire body in an aerobic activity you are able to burn calories faster while you are toning and sculpting all of those muscles.

What About My Bones?

In recent years there has been a lot of information in the health world about bone density and osteoporosis. It has come to be known that in order to prevent the disease or slow its progress you should engage in weight bearing exercise. This is particularly important for women who face a greater risk of this bone disease.

Generally if you want to perform weight bearing exercise, it will take the form of using free weights or weight machines in the gym. But you can also perform a cardiovascular exercise that is weight bearing exercise as well. With elliptical machines you are not only getting an excellent cardio workout, but you are also getting a weight resistant exercise as well which helps to build bone density.

Is An Elliptical Challenging Enough For Me?

Sometimes, more advanced exercisers will worry that they will soon out perform their gym equipment and require something more challenging. This is not a concern with an elliptical trainer because you can adjust the tension and resistance on the machine allowing it to grow with the individual.

Most of the better elliptical trainers also have on board computers which allow the user to set different programs each time that they work out. You can choose from different weight loss workouts, and interval workouts. Most machines have between six and eight different programs in the on board computer.

Who Can Use The Elliptical Trainer?

The wonderful thing about the elliptical exerciser is that it is easy to use and everyone, regardless of their personal fitness level can use it successfully with very little training. Because the machine simulates the action of walking and running combined with skiing and cycling it is a workout that appeals to many different people.

The elliptical machines are great for pregnant women who want to remain active through their pregnancy as well because the workout is a low impact workout. And because it is low impact it also appeals to older people who have joint problems as well.

What Is The Bottom Line?

The bottom line is that the elliptical trainer provides an excellent total body workout for people of all fitness levels. Whether you want to lose weight or just get an effective cardio workout the elliptical cross trainer is an excellent choice.

Elliptical Machine Workouts – What Are the Advantages of Choosing Ellipticals Over Other Machines?

February 3rd, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Admittedly, fitness enthusiasts have various exercise equipment to choose from nowadays. You have the indoor rowing machines, the treadmills, the stair climbers, the stationary bikes and the elliptical trainers. Of all these machines, the elliptical trainers are the best of the bunch for many reasons.

Low-Impact Exercise

We are all worried about lessening the impact on our joints. After all, stresses and injuries to these parts of our bodies will leave us feeling less than able to perform our daily activities, even something as ordinary as walking. And so, we always find ways to either choose the exercise with the lesser impact or make a high-impact exercise less injurious through proper attire, proper technique and proper use of equipment.

If you choose to go the first route, the elliptical trainer is the best exercise machine for this purpose. It is a very low-impact exercise because your feet never leave the comfort and safety of the foot pedals, thus, significantly lessening the load off the weight-bearing joints.

Whole Body Exercise

Unlike the other machines, the elliptical trainer provides for a total body workout. This is possible because your lower body is being exercised by the movements of the foot pedal while the upper body is being developed through the handlebars. Of course, the lower body takes most of the exercise benefits since 70 percent of the power to perform the exercise comes from it. The upper body provides the 30 percent, said ratio of which cannot be said of the exercise machines like the stair climbers and treadmills.

You may also choose to either concentrate solely on the lower body or increase the intensity of the exercise for the upper body. If you choose the former, you can do away with the handlebars, thus, placing more pressure on your lower limbs to carry the whole exercise. If you opt for the latter, then you can substitute the handlebars with hand weights for added weight. Just be sure to swing your arms in time with your steps on the elliptical machine to keep your balance.

Whether you choose to opt for a whole body workout or focus on the lower body or place greater emphasis on the upper body, you are assured that you are getting the best cardio workout possible. In the process, you are burning more fat and calories, toning more muscles and improving your cardiovascular health.

Lesser Perceived Effort

Furthermore, you get all the above benefits will less perceived effort. Simply put, it is the elliptical trainer user’s perception that he is exerting lesser effort on the exercise and yet somehow feeling the burn faster and more intensely than had he exercised on the treadmill harder and for a longer period of time.

The result is that you will be more motivated to put in the extra minutes and the extra intensity to the elliptical trainer exercise. Ultimately, you will benefit in the form of more fats and calories burned.

With all these superior exercise benefits that elliptical trainers provide, it is no wonder then that these exercise machines are considered the best in the fitness industry in its category.

The best elliptical trainer for you is easier to find than you think. Visit http://www.1-stop-fitness.com/ to learn more.

Choosing the Ideal Elliptical Machine Stride Length

January 1st, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The stride length is the longest distance between your feet in the elliptical motion. This is the most important feature to look at when you are considering purchasing an elliptical machine because you want to choose the stride length that fits your body type. Think about when you walk or run. Your stride length gets longer as you start to run, so usually shorter stride lengths are not as comfortable for the average person. Choosing the right stride length for your personal machine can be tough if you haven’t been on many different ellipticals or paid attention to the stride length of the machines you like.

If you’ve ever chatted with people about which elliptical machines they believe to be the best, you will usually get different answers. Not all elliptical machines fit everyone the same. Unlike purchasing a treadmill or other pieces of workout equipment, an elliptical machine needs to fit your body type just right or it will feel uncomfortable or jerky. An elliptical machine may feel perfect to someone else but feel horrible to you. If you feel uncomfortable on a machine, it’s most likely because the stride length doesn’t fit your body appropriately.

Some elliptical machines offer an adjustable stride length. This is a more expensive feature but its great if you are going to have several users of different heights, or you will be alternating from walking and running speeds. However, usually one size fits all will do if you get the stride length close enough to what is required for your body type. There is no need to pay for the adjustable stride length features when you can get the stride length close to the needs of all users. Most people are able to adjust to the feel of an elliptical machine over time. Also, you will typically be moving at higher speeds in order to keep your heart rate at an optimal level so the need to vary your stride lengths during a workout is not required.

Stride Length and User Height

Let’s review some helpful information that may help you choose your stride length. Understand that this decision is going to be directly related to your height. You don’t have to get it exact. Just follow the rules of thumb outlined below and you will be able to identify a stride length that will work well enough for your body. A difference in an inch isn’t going to be noticeable and you will adjust. You can also go with what you know. If you know the stride lengths of machines you feel comfortable on, stick with that.

Users Below 5′4″

Shorter elliptical users will be able to exercise comfortable on an elliptical stride length of 18″ or less.

Users Between 5′4″ and 5′8″

Any stride length bellow at 16″ or less will probably be uncomfortable for people of average height. We recommend you stick with ellipticals with a stride length of 18″. The closer you are to 5′8″ you are, you may want to consider up to a 20″ stride. I am 5′6″ and I feel great on machines with a stride length between 18″ and 20″.

Users Above 5′9″

The taller you are, the more you will want to think about getting a machine with a longer stride length. If you are closer to 5′9″ you will probably be ok even with an 18″ stride, although we do recommend you try at least a 19″ stride. The taller you are, you should try a 21″ plus elliptical stride length.

A longer the stride length may cost you a little more money but you cannot cut corners here. If you choose the right stride length, no matter the flywheel position or the cost of the elliptical trainer, you should experience a more effective and comfortable workout
