Elliptical Trainers Help You Reach Your Weight Loss Goals

September 1st, 2010

If you are working toward a weight loss goal, you know how important diet is in helping you reach it. But what about exercise? Incorporating regular exercise into your lifestyle will help you look and feel better in less time than dieting alone.

But what type of exercise is right for you? Elliptical Trainers can be wonderful to help you lose weight, and good models are available for low prices, so you can own one and exercise at home.

Elliptical trainers combine multiple forms of actions including cross country skiing, bicycling and rowing. They cause you to use all of your major muscle groups in a consistent and fluid motion that does not have much impact. Quality elliptical trainers will not have jerky motions and they are smooth and therefore quiet, which results in a more peaceful workout.

Most elliptical trainers have a readout that shows your calories used, mileage, time, and heart rate. They allow you to watch television or even catch up on some reading while you are working out, so it is very easy to include your work out into your daily routine. Remember – the more you work out, the faster you lose weight.

Because elliptical trainers allow you to work your upper and lower body muscle groups together, you will not be bored during your workout. Also, you do not have to buy several machines or spend hours at the gym working individual muscle groups.

Some quality ellipticals allow you to chart your weight loss progress, which can be an excellent motivational strategy. When it comes to exercising to burn calories, elliptical trainers will have you on your way to your weight loss goal in no time.

Warming Up to Exercise – Can it Reduce the Stress?

July 26th, 2010

Warming up is very important when you are going to exercise. Whether you are going for a walk, a run, or going to the gym to hit the weights you should consider what muscles you are going to be using and make sure that they are prepared for what you are going to do. You may need just to do a light sort of stretching routine for a couple minutes if you are going for a walk, but if you are doing more than that, you may need more extensive warm-up

A problem that we have in today’s society is that we are becoming a very sedentary people. This is especially true in western civilization. As you are sitting at your desk reading this article, you are aware of certain nagging aches that occur from being in one position for too long. You need to get up and stretch once in a while even for “just” sitting.

Stretching is an important part of warming up, and it should be considered part of your exercise program, rather than a separate aspect. It should become something you do without thought. It just happens. But make sure whatever warming up you do is actually warming up the muscles you are planning to use.

This is a big mistake that I see people make all the time. They go into a gym and get on the treadmill and walk for five minutes and consider that to be their warm-up. This may be fine if you are planning on doing a leg workout, but if you are doing anything upper body related, or arms, how is walking on a treadmill warming you up? I mean really you walked into the gym, if walking is enough that would have taken care of things.

A simple effective warm up is doing whatever exercise you are working on, and doing a set of ten repetitions with a very light weight. For example if you are going to bench press, do ten reps with just the bar and no weights on it at all. That actually does stretch the muscles you are about to use. It’s effective and simple stretching at its best.

Anyone who sits at a computer desk all day knows the aches and pains which are incurred unless some form of stretching is engaged in during the day. Conversely, if one hasn’t been exercising for some time or has a sedentary lifestyle, walking even 20 minutes results in soreness and pain.

If you are planning a walk or a run, you aren’t going to walk or run to get ready to do that. Well, I’ll take that back a bit. You may walk to warm up for your run, but you should also stretch your leg muscles and your core. It is very important to stretch your calf muscles as well as your quadriceps and hamstrings. To do this you can spread your legs twice shoulder width apart and stretch toward the ground with your fingertips, keeping your knees straight. That gets your hamstrings. Your quads can be stretched by standing upright and lifting a leg behind you, one at a time. Calves are best stretched by using a step or a curb to extend your toes toward the sky.

Just try to remember that whatever body part you are going to be exercising has to be the one that is involved in the stretch/warm up. That little piece of advice will serve you in whatever you do.

The Elliptical Machine is Not Great For Fat Loss

July 14th, 2010

So, you want to lose some fat? Are you spending 30+ minutes on an elliptical machine multiple times a week trying to burn the fat from your body?

Is it working?

Sure, you may have lost a few pounds, but my guess is that your progress has stalled. Well I’m here to tell you that the elliptical machine is not great for fat loss. I don’t use it, and I don’t tell any of my clients to use it. There are far more effective methods that will melt the fat from your body in less time. That’s right: it is possible to get more results in less time. You just have to know what to do!

I have a challenge for you. Just try it, because you have nothing to lose but fat!

Instead of spending 30+ minutes on an elliptical machine, try lifting weights. Yes, I know it sounds strange but it has never, and will never, fail. By lifting weights you will make your body build lean muscle. No, ladies, this is not going to be “bulky” muscle. Trust me, you want this to happen.

By building lean muscle, you will increase your metabolism; that allows you to burn more calories throughout the day and night. In addition to increasing your metabolism, you will build a toned body. An elliptical machine doesn’t do anything to give your body a tight and firm look. You have to build muscle for that.

Time and time again I have seen women (and men) spend hours a week on an elliptical machine in an effort to burn fat. A couple months later they are smaller, but they don’t really look any better. They just have that “skinny-fat” look. They’re smaller, but they still have a good amount of fat on their body. Since they aren’t strength training, they have lost muscle, too. Losing muscle decreases your metabolism.

To truly get that lean, firm, athletic look, you must lift weights. Instead of spending 30 minutes on an elliptical, try this: Sets: 4 Reps: 8 Rest: 60 seconds between exercises

1a) Front Squat

1b) Dumbbell Bench Press

1c) Reverse Lunge

1d) 1 Arm Dumbbell Row

Perform 8 reps of each exercise, and rest 60 seconds between exercises. Go through the circuit 4 times. That simple workout will get you on the fast track to a lean and firm body. That is something the elliptical machine will never do.

Look at it this way: who has a better physique: A) Marathon runners who spend hours doing cardio or B) Sprinters, gymnasts, or other athletes who engage in strength training

The answer is most certainly B. Muscle gives you a lean, athletic look. If you want that look, you have to train with weights.

The 10 Minute Weight Loss Workout

July 3rd, 2010

Here is a quick workout which will allow you to burn TONS of calories as well as stimulate muscle growth. It only takes about 10 minutes to complete and you don’t even need to go to a gym to do it! These exercises do not require any weights, only your own bodyweight and a desire for a better, healthier body.

10 Minute Weight Loss Workout

Exercise 1: Rocket Jumps

To do a rocket jump, simply space your feet a little more than shoulder width apart. Keeping your back straight and chin tucked in, lower yourself until you are in a position where it seems like you are sitting in a chair (without the chair, obviously). Lower yourself slowly. Try to take about 3-4 seconds to move from the starting position (standing) to the end position (almost seated).

When you are in the end position you are going to explode upwards with all your force. Try to jump as high as you possibly can, and then land softly. Once you land, immediately begin doing another rocket jump.

Try doing 2 sets of 5 to begin with. You can obviously increase this if your fitness levels can handle it.

Exercise 2: Burpees

Burpees are the ultimate quick weight loss exercise. You are going to burn TONS and TONS of calories with them. If you are not sure how to do this exercise, just do a quick search for “burpee exercise” or something of the like.

Do as many as you can in 2 minutes. I recommend throwing on some music to make the workout a little more enjoyable!

Make sure you stretch before this workout. In all, it should only take you about 10-12 minutes to complete. Don’t forget to drink a protein shake after!

Remember – if you HAVEN’T been able to lose weight before…it’s NOT your fault! Knowledge is POWER, and the most important step on the path to a firm, fit & beautiful body is information, EDUCATION and empowerment!

Is This The Best Exercise To Lose Weight?

June 12th, 2010

The best exercise to lose weight is probably not what you think. This may be surprising to you, but one of the biggest myths about exercising is that you have to sweat bullets to lose weight and burn fat. Actually, low-intensity cardio workouts that are varied by interval levels will help your body to burn a higher percentage of calories from fat.

The best fat burning workouts start with a slow, aerobic exercise where you increase the intensity level for a period and then return to back the slower pace. These workouts involve most major muscle groups so they are much more effective at burning body fat.

If you only do high intensity workouts, your body will burn more sugar instead of burning fat, because the body needs quick energy. Sugar from the food in your system will deliver that quick energy that your body is craving much quicker than fat.

Basketball, running, racquetball, and playing tennis and other high intensity workouts can definitely benefit your overall fitness, but those types of exercises will not burn as much body fat because your body makes better use of the sugar in your system for quick energy.

So, low-intensity cardio workouts where you vary your intensity level are actually the best fat burning workouts because these types of exercises require slow but steady fuel and your body will eventually start burning stored fat for the energy it requires.

Walking at different speeds, cycling, swimming, elliptical trainer workouts, and different treadmill workouts are all good examples of good fat burning workouts. Just remember to vary the levels of intensity to get the best fat burning results from your workout.

Exercises like these will ramp up your metabolism, meaning that you will continue to burn fat long after the workout is done. People who exercise regularly produce a greater amount of fat burning enzymes than those who don’t exercise.

Long workouts are not necessarily required. You can start with just twenty minutes of a good fat burning workout to get the fat burning enzymes going. Once your level of fitness gets better, you can eventually add more time to your workout. For beginners, 3 days a week would be a good start, gradually working up to 5 days as your fitness level improves.

Treadmills and elliptical trainers are the most popular fitness equipment for home workouts because they allow you to stay fit in any weather condition and the whole family can use them. If you don’t have time to go to the gym, they are an ideal alternative and quality fitness equipment will last for many years.

Stationary bikes provide for great fat burning workouts. They are easy to change the intensity for greater resistance as well as lowering resistance to achieve the variations that you need in your workouts.

These small changes in the way you workout can make a lot of difference in how much body fat you can burn. Start using the best fat burning workouts that work best for you and you can turbo charge your metabolism and burn maximum body fat to make every workout count.

Pursuing Natural Remedies For Weight Loss

June 3rd, 2010

Weight gain is a natural process. And for normal people, it happens without any medication or drugs. Weight gain is a result of overeating or lack of exercise or some underlying disease. To resolve the situation people seek various ways to reduce their unwanted weight. There are two ways to reduce weight – one is the natural way and the other by means of artificial techniques. Natural remedies for weight loss include diet control, increased physical activities, steam therapy and use of fat burning diets and herbs. Artificial techniques can be broadly divided into two methods. The primary method includes use of weight loss drugs and medicines. The secondary method deals with invasive procedures – surgical removal of fat tissue or adipose tissue, liposuction, laser surgery etc.

There are many reasons for an overweight individual to choose natural remedies for weight loss rather than trying out the artificial ones. In fact, artificial remedies can be considered as a last resort when all the natural remedies have failed. A strong reason for choosing to pursue natural remedies is that they are less expensive than artificial techniques. While browsing online or reading magazines you must have come across several ads about medications for losing weight and diet supplements. The common factor about all these products is that they are all pricey. Some may come at cheap rates, but certainly, the effective ones are all expensive.

For a complete weight loss package, they would charge you anywhere around $200 to $600 or even more. And if you are thinking about instant weight loss techniques like surgery and liposuction, then you better ensure that your financial security is able enough to support the pre and post operative hospital bills. These surgeries are not only expensive but they are also associated with several postoperative aftereffects that can charge you with recurrent treatment costs. So, beware if you are about to choose the artificial option for losing weight.

I am sure, by now you must have realized why people are so much curious about natural remedies for weight loss. Even those who can afford any number of surgeries are opting for natural remedies because they know that doing it the natural way is the best solution. The fruits of reducing weight by natural methods last for several years, plus they make the body feel and look younger and healthier. Usage of fat burning drugs might give you rapid results but once you stop the medication you will gain back all your weight and probably even more than what you originally had in the beginning.

The bottom line is, if at all you are facing issues with your weight, you cannot afford to ignore certain basic natural remedies for weight loss such as fat- free diet and regular exercise. These remedies lay the basic foundation for a healthy living and a fit body. So, you cannot possibility ignore them even if you are pursing any non-natural method for shedding those extra calories stored in your body.

Do you know there are natural remedies for weight loss? Have you ever tried them? If not, then simply visit http://acaiberriesdiets.com/ for getting more information on natural remedies of weight loss.

Can Elliptical Trainers Prevent Osteoporosis?

May 24th, 2010

I recall looking through a large batch of photos a colleague at work had taken during a visit to China. Amongst the photos of imperial palaces and glorious temples there were also many photos of ordinary people going about their daily routines. One series of photos captured a small group of elderly women setting up for a game of Mahjong in a city square.

The women were organizing chairs and the game boards along with setting up tea and snacks. In one photo I noticed a woman who was severely hunched over with her upper back exhibiting signs of the classic “Dowager’s Hump”. It was evident that she was suffering from an advanced case of osteoporosis.

This is an extreme example of osteoporosis, but even less extreme cases can have severe consequences. The most common problem is bone factures of the spine, hip, and wrist. Osteoporosis literally means “porous bones”. As a result, bones become less dense and more prone to fractures.

Osteoporosis is known as a silent disease since it can be present for years before symptoms such as fractures become apparent. Once fractures occur, the effects can range from loss of height, disability, and sometimes, even death.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the 10 million Americans who have osteoporosis, 80% are women, but men are afflicted as well. Heredity and ethnicity are also determining factors with whites and Asians more susceptible than blacks or Hispanics. However, no group is immune to osteoporosis.

Prevention of osteoporosis ideally needs to begin in childhood and continue throughout one’s life. Children should receive adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D and also be physically active. Ninety percent of our bone mass is acquired by the age of 20.

It should go without saying, but in addition to causing heart and lung disease, smoking should be avoided since it is a risk factor for osteoporosis. Anorexia and bulimia are also known to place women at greater risk for osteoporosis.

For adults, one of the most important things they can do to prevent osteoporosis is to engage in regular weight-bearing exercise. Weight-bearing exercise is any activity where your full body weight is supported by your legs, hips, and spine. Walking, running, and skiing are examples of weight-bearing activities. Cycling, rowing, and swimming, though great cardio-vascular conditioning activities are not weight-bearing.

One of the drawbacks of running is the pounding your knees, hips, and ankles must endure. An activity that’s easy on your joints yet still weight-bearing is elliptical training. An elliptical trainer is a low impact fitness machine that can help stimulate bone cell growth while also helping you to burn fat and improve your cardio-vascular conditioning.

An elliptical trainer can be your secret weapon in the fight against osteoporosis.

Exercise Gliders

May 23rd, 2010

An At Home Alternative To An Elliptical Machine

If you’ve used an elliptical machine at a gym and you’d like to have a light weight inexpensive version of the same thing at home than an exercise glider may be what you are looking for. While buying an elliptical machine for your home will probably cost you about $1000, you can get an exercise glider for less than $100. An example of an exercise glider is Tony Little’s “Gazelle” which is advertised on television. It costs about $100.

Exercise Gliders Fold Up Easily (Saves Space)

If you don’t have much space in your home then the fact that an exercise glider such as the “Gazelle” folds easily is a big positive. If you live in a small apartment like me then it’s a huge positive! I just don’t have space to have a big elliptical machine in the middle of the living room all the time. To me that’s just as important as the fact that they are about $1000 cheaper for pretty much the same type of exercise.

Low Impact Workout

One of the great things about working out with an exercise glider is the fact that it gives you a low impact workout. This is great for those of us with bad knees or for people who are significantly overweight. Walking on the concrete can be very hard on the knees. Why not burn the calories without the wear & tear on the knees? That’s what you get with an exercise glider.

Cardio Is An Important Part Of Losing Weight

Combining cardio exercise with a smart fat burning diet (stay away from low calorie starvation diets) is a great way to lose weight fast.
