3 Exercises That Leads to Constant Weight Loss

January 31st, 2010

Daily exercise alone is great for burning calories, but if you are not doing it properly it’s going to be a long, slow road to getting the weight loss you desire. Cardiovascular exercises increases your metabolic rate causing the fat burning capacity of your body to increase dramatically.

The truth is, it’s not only about trimming and getting rid of fat, and it should be more on strengthening the abs muscle. Just remember, when we talk about developing the abs, exercises alone aren’t enough. Weight loss exercises have helped many people who failed at lose weight. This article will reveal you the procedure on how to lose weight quickly and the three of the most effective exercises you can do at home.

1. THE LONG ARM CRUNCH

The long arm crunch is a variation of the traditional crunch that works the upper abdominal muscles. This exercise is harder than the traditional crunch and if done properly will provide some great results.

The exercise is done lying on an exercise mat with your back flat against the mat and your legs outstretched with your feet flexed. Then extend your arms above your head while gripping together forming a long arm lever that rests against the mat. Then hold your neck in a straight line with your spine as if resisting bending your neck as the crunch is done.

To perform the crunches effectively make sure to keep your back and heels pressed against the mat while completing the crunch. Raise your shoulder blades and arms off the mat to come up into a basic crunch using your upper abdominals.

Take a deep breath in the resting position before you start the crunch and exhale as you come up into the crunch. Take another deep breath in as your return to the resting position. If you are beginner a set of 12 to 16 repetitions is enough to start with and the number of repetitions can be increased as you become more comfortable with the exercise.

2. CROSSOVER CRUNCHES

Crossover crunch is another great exercise for the ab muscles. It is recommended that you do the crunch slowly when you do the “crossover” part of the crunch to engage the oblique muscles.

To do this exercise lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor about hip-width apart and gently place your fingertips behind your head. Cross your right leg over your left leg so your right ankle is resting on your left knee. Inhale and Raise your right shoulders up and toward your left knee as high and as far as possible twisting your torso to touch your left elbow to your right knee. Begin exhaling when you pass the sticking point.

At the maximum twist position, hold momentarily and exhale the rest of the air in your lungs. Inhale and return to the startReturn to the starting position and repeat for the desired number of repetitions before switching over to the other side.Raise your crossing shoulder as high as possible when you go into the twisting action to get the best results.

3. The Captain’s Chair: The #1 Best Ab Exercise

The Captain’s Chair is fairly inexpensive equipment made of a metal or wood frame in the shape of an extended chair with no seat, built with a pair of high, padded armrests fitted with small vertical posts or handles. You have to be careful when doing this exercise to keep your lower back stable when dong the exercise. Do not arch your back during this exercise. If you can’t do it correctly, then you shouldn’t do it at all.

The exercise is done while in a standing position. Stand on the chair and grip the handles to stabilize your upper body. Press your back against the pad and slowly lift knees until your thighs are horizontal. Raise your knees until they almost touch your chest. Hold the position is for a few seconds, and then slowly lower your legs until they are in the vertical position again.

Make sure to keep your lower back firmly in place – otherwise you won’t be strengthening your abs. If you don’t feel the tightening and burning in your abs after a few reps you’re probably not doing the exercise properly. Repeat the exercise 10 to 15 times for each set. You can do the exercise while sitting on an ordinary chair if The Captain’s Chair is not available.

Performing some sets for each of the abdominal exercises above on a regular basis in parallel with proper eating habits should lead you to constant weight loss.

Elliptical Comparison – What To Look At When Comparing Elliptical Trainers

January 29th, 2010

If you’re buying an elliptical, you’ll want to make several elliptical comparisons and get the best deal. Enter the Internet. With the knowledge you can find online, buyers can get a much better deal than they used to get at their local department store.

So what do you need to know when making elliptical comparisons? While the elliptical market is getting more crowded each year, there are some simple things you can look for to find the best value models.

This article will give you 7 main features to look at when you compare elliptical trainers along with where to make easy elliptical comparisons.

1) Stride Length – This is essentially the farthest distance between the pedals during the elliptical motion. Stride length ranges on ellipticals from 12 to 21 inches.

Stride length is important as a short stride length doesn’t fully work your leg muscles and doesn’t give you as effective a workout as longer stride ellipticals. Cheaper ellipticals usually offer a 12 to 15 inch stride.

For the average height person an 18 inch stride is good. Taller people may prefer a 20 inch stride and shorter people may prefer a 16 to 18 inch stride.

2) Upper Body Workout Arms – Most people want the option to work their arms while exercising. This helps provide resistance training for your upper body so you burn more calories and get a better workout overall. This feature is found on most elliptical trainers however on some – even the higher end ones – it is not available.

You also want to make sure you don’t have to lean over while using the bars which can diminish the effectiveness of your workout (this can happen on many of the cheaper elliptical models which don’t have the proper arm to leg pedal ratio).

3) Weight Capacity – The user weight capacity is a great indicator of the stability of the elliptical trainer. For example, a 250 lb user weight capacity may mean that it can take up to 250 lbs however it is not nearly as stable as one with a 350 lb user weight capacity.

The 250 lb elliptical also probably won’t hold up as well if you want to pick up your pace. Highly stable elliptical trainers will have higher user weight capacities (depending on your weight this could be 300 lbs and up).

4) Warranty – While warranties range for different elliptical trainers, you want to choose an elliptical with at least a one year parts warranty – preferably longer.

Just like user weight capacity, the length of the warranty is another indicator of the quality of parts used to build the elliptical machine. A longer warranty indicates a higher quality of elliptical construction.

5) Console: – While there are a range of different options here, it really depends on you. Do you want to see calories burned, speed, time, distance, heart rate? Do you want to see them all simultaneously?

One thing to watch for is that the console is well lit so you can read it while you exercise. Many cheaper ellipticals are hard to read, especially if the lighting in your workout area is not the best.

6) Resistance – Resistance is basically how hard your legs have to push during the elliptical motion. Resistance gives you more of a challenge while you workout and can help you ramp up your calorie burn or work intervals into your workout.

Most elliptical trainers do offer a range of resistance levels. Look for a trainer that makes resistance changes simple (i.e. one-touch resistance adjustment).

7) Price – Ellipticals range in price from $300 to $3000. It’s up to you what you pay but just keep in mind that with elliptical trainers – price usually reflects quality – you do get what you pay for.

Economy priced ellipticals (under $800) are simply not built as well as higher quality ellipticals in the $900+ range and this can end up costing you in repairs, injury and less effective workouts.

Finally, when buying your elliptical trainer, remember to consider everyone who will be using it, their weight capacity, workout preferences and fitness goals.

By knowing these facts when making elliptical comparisons, you’re way ahead of 99% of most elliptical buyers and well prepared to choose the best elliptical for you.

Nordic Track CX938 Elliptical Trainer Review

January 27th, 2010

The Nordic Track CX938 elliptical trainer is the entry level machine from one of the largest fitness equipment manufacturers in the world, Icon Health and Fitness. Nordic Track is a well-known brand in this market and has many elliptical machine models available for purchase.

The CX 938 is priced at approximately $600, and is similar to Reebok’s budget elliptical machine, the 525. When purchasing a cheap elliptical trainer you need to be fully aware of what to expect. Like any type of fitness equipment, you often get what you pay for, and this is no different with elliptical trainers. Having said this, the Nordic Track CX938 has some nice features, including an 18 inch stride, iFit compatibility, pulse sensors, and 10 built-in exercise programs. Furthermore the 1 year warranty on parts, labor, and motor will come in useful if anything goes wrong with the machine, although it is a good idea to purchase an extended warranty when buying cheap fitness equipment just in case.

For frequent use of an elliptical machine it is often recommended to spend over $1000 on a high-quality machine. The CX 938 elliptical trainer has a weight limit restriction of 250 pounds, indicating the structural strength of the trainer. For the average home user though this should be adequate. Like many machines of this price, the CX938 has the Silent Magnetic Resistance (SMR) as opposed to Eddy Current, which provides a smoother motion.

On the plus side, this particular trainer has an 18 inch stride which is suitable for most small and medium sized adults, and the fan system is good at cooling during a workout. The display console is also nice, providing details such as calorie burn, distance covered, speed, resistance level, and pulse rate.

Elliptical trainers are increasing in popularity as equipment for home fitness. As such, there are plenty of brands to choose from, all offering models with different features and at different prices. Reading reviews and comparing similar models is a good way to find the best elliptical trainer within your price range. For example, you may want to consider the ProForm 1280 costing around the same as the Nordic Track CX938 elliptical trainer, yet providing good value for money.

Horizon Elliptical Trainer – Good Value in Fitness

January 24th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

According to Horizon the fluid motion of a horizon elliptical trainer is tied to its front located flywheel. If you are a new to elliptical trainers you may find the motion sometimes described as running in air, unusual. Horizon ellipticals are designed to be used in the home and are found in most big box retail stores such as Sears. The parent company Johnson manufactures Horizon elliptical trainers as well as its premier line called the elite series which is sold in high end fitness outlets. The only major difference between the two lines of ellipticals is in the consol electronics and the standard exercise routine programs.

Horizon elliptical trainers are very popular with people who use their equipment a couple of times a week. Horizon elliptical trainers are considered low to medium priced exercise equipment. This does not mean that they do not perform well if used in the home on a casual basis. However, if you are going to use your elliptical trainer 3 or more days a week using intensive exercise routine you may want to consider a higher end elliptical trainer.

Problems noted by Horizon elliptical trainer owners include problems with the braking system as well as frequent failure of many of the plastic parts. The Horizon EX 75 Dual Action Elliptical Trainer has a fairly good reputation and following among the in home elliptical trainer users. Comments included stable platform and easy to adjust resistance levels. This Horizon elliptical trainer model retails for about $1000.00. When considering any elliptical trainer we recommend that you spend at least $1000.00 and preferably $1200.00 to assure that you will get a good durable elliptical trainer. The Horizons EX 75 and CSE 4.6 elliptical trainer models meet this criteria.

The more expensive Horizon elliptical trainer models are popular and are considered a good buy. Prior to purchasing any piece of exercise equipment you should take the time to take the model you are considering for a test ride. This can be done at some of the fitness retail outlets. Make sure you spend at least thirty minutes on the machine while observing noise levels, stability and ease of operation. Also check out the exercise programs to see if they meet your exercise routine goals. It appears that the Horizon elliptical trainer comes with a one year warranty which we find insufficient. Spending the money for an extended warranty is recommended. Horizon elliptical trainers should be able to meet your in home exercise program.
